Recent and Past Events 2006-2007

Earth Day in Nevada County
Saturday, May 3
Loma Rica Ranch
Grass Valley, CA
Nevada County Recycles brought Haute Trash to the stage for our local Earth Day celebration, thanking Nevada County residents for all their efforts in achieving our recycling rate of 60%. We have reached our initial goal and ask that you keep up the great job of recycling everything you can and help us get to Zero Waste!!

This was a Zero Waste event, so the only trash at this venue was the HAUTE variety! Haute Trash helped to deliver the message, as our models strolled across the grassy lawn at beautiful Loma Rica Ranch. Big thanks to our emcee tag team, Daria and Kenny.

Tahoe Truckee Earth Day
April 26, 2008
The Village at Squaw Valley
Squaw Valley, CA
This was our second appearance at the Tahoe Truckee Earth Day celebration in beautiful Squaw Valley! Haute Trash presented a runway packed with all new fashions to the raucous crowd that that surrounded our stage. Models were gathered from all around the bio-region, and this was yet another mind-boggling episode in trash fashion history. Emcees for the show were Daria Kent of Nevada County Recycles and rock star Kenny Miele. Pictured here are Kenny and Truckee model Meghan Kelly, wearing "Thinking Green" from Prima Debris.

IDAHO FALLS EARTH DAY!
April 26, 2008
Idaho Falls, ID

This was our second "satellite" show in Idaho Falls, under the guidance of Jose Bunzow. Jose works for the Department of Energy and she's a huge Haute Trash fan! We sent her a handful of outfits, and she single-handedly made it happen at the Earth Day Celebration in Idaho Falls.

Watch for coming reviews of the show!

Monday, April 21, 11:00 am
United Natural Foods, Inc
Rocklin, CA
It was with great pleasure that we said "yes" when UNFI's Green Team asked us to perform an in-house show for their company's upcoming Earth Week festivities. In particular, because designers Prima and Rayona have a long history with the company, dating back to the early 80s. Back then, it was "Mountain Peoples Warehouse", a small company with a dozen employees, two of whom were Prima and Rayona, who were doing everything from taking hand-written orders to going out on truck runs and delivering to tiny co-ops in the middle of nowhere! Even back then, they gleaned lots of good trash from the warehouse, most notably Rayona's "Mountain Peoples Metallic Line", which debuted in 1988.

Since then, Mountain Peoples has gone on to become United Natural Foods Inc, the nation's largest distributor of natural foods. UNFI's Green Team aspires to be environmentally conscious and utilize sustainable business practices in all aspects of their daily operations. They are dedicated to environmental improvements that foster a sustainable future and lead to awareness within the industry and the community they do business.

Prima and Rayona were joined by Redusa and Queena D'Trash, and we recruited a number of UNFI's employees to brave the runway! And making her designer debut was UNFI's Sara Etchieson. She created some pieces exclusively from UNFI's own daily trash. Master of Ceremonies was the multi-talented, multi-tasking Lee May.

6th Annual
ReStore Show
April 18th, 2008
New York Fashion Academy
Seattle, WA

photos by
Doug Bulger

The 6th annual ReStore Art and Fashion show began with a wind that whipped down Ballard Avenue and exploded in a clap of thunder that shook the New York Fashion Academy building and the already excited group of trashy models getting ready upstairs. The sold out show was no less of an impact. Rayona was emcee and helped to promote Seattle¡¦s Zero Waste initiative by reminding the crowd that nature is our best teacher in this regard. Nature is a perfect example of the ¡§closed loop system¡¨, meaning that is EVERYTHING is used, reused, composted, and feeds EVERYTHING else. The stuff that doesn¡¦t work for nature - we humans made it, and we should take responsibility for dealing with it. Like Julia Butterfly says: When you throw it away¡K just where is ¡§away¡¨?

Gracing the 60 foot runway that twisted and turned around the entire room were a bevy of top notch models displaying the works of three veteran local Haute Trash designers: Mary Welch of Wayward Girls Productions, Allota DeTritus, and Chako San, along with first-time trash designers Summer Godfrey, Angel Estes, Jade Tabares and Michelle Auer. Michelle works for the Stranger, an alternative Seattle weekly newspaper, and she had her ¡§Stranger Party Dress¡¨ featured on the cover that week. About 20 pieces were shown from California designers Prima Debris, Redusa D¡¦ Trash, Rayona Visqueen and Elvira Mental Werks. Don¡¦t worry Seattle, we¡¦ll be back!

THE NEW
OLD TIME CHAUTAUQUA
St. Joseph's Hall
Grass Valley, CA

February 15th - 17th, 2008
The New Old Time Chautauqua rolled into Grass Valley recently with it's usual clamor of joy and good will, bringing vaudeville artists from as far as New York City and Port Townsend, Washington. Cowgirls with rope tricks, bubble magic, The Flying Karamazov Brothers with their Juggling and Cheap Theatrics, a bevy of folk singers and, of course, Haute Trash! All spent the weekend embracing our friends at Hospitality House Shelter, parading through the streets of Grass Valley and putting on three stellar variety shows. Saturday night's show went over 4 hours and ended in a standing ovation. Duncan Phillips was on hand to bring a podcast of his dad Utah Phillips, from the hospital in San Francisco. Haute Trash was extremely proud to present a showcase of the work of our young designer Chicca Plastique (Soleil Smith-Normand) at the Sunday matinee.

Haute Trash has had the pleasure of being involved with the New Old Time Chautauqua since 2000, when designer and producer Rayona Visqueen began travelling with the troupe. She's staged numerous trash fashion shows on their cross-country road trips, most recently to do relief work in New Orleans in the spring of 2006.

SYRCL'S
WILD AND SCENIC FILM FESTIVAL

January 12, 2008
Nevada City, California

Haute Trash was incredibly pleased to take part in the 6th Annual Wild and Scenic Film Festival, the country's largest environmental film festival. The South Yuba River Citizens League plays host to this event in the historic town of Nevada City, which transforms into a cinematic wonderland for the weekend! Learn more about the festival by visiting their website.

Haute Trash was asked to stage a "scene" at the gala awards ceremony, and we stepped up to the challenge! We booked some of our top models and designers, and dressed them in our most elegant, Oscar night gowns. Our "starlets", Daria, Aria, Queena, Rachael and Racey, were then picked up by a bio-diesel "limo", chauffered by the fabulously attired Dave Peterson. A brief spin around the block, and they were deposited on the red carpet out in front of the historic Nevada Theatre, where they were met with the usual fanfare of papparazzi and roliing video cameras. Eric was on hand, in his Money Bags Suit, to help our models to gracefully alight in their sometimes awkward costumes! Our models assisted in presenting awards to the Film Festival winners. Then it was on to the VIP party at the Nevada City Winery. Elvira, Rayona and Prima mingled with the guests while serving up trays of chocolate covered strawberries and other decadent goodies. A huge thanks goes out to our amazing Valoree Bringman and Tanya Robertson, who did a great job of making sure our model's hair and make-up was worthy of the red carpet!

SAN FRANCISCO PLASTIC BAG BAN BASH
111 Minna Gallery
San Francisco, CA

SAY NO TO PLASTIC BAGS AND YES TO REUSABLE BAGS!!

The ChicoBag company, in partnership with the San Francisco Department of the Environment, Haight Ashbury Neighborhood Council and the Surfrider Foundation put on a fantastic party to celebrate San Francisco's banning of plastic shopping bags. This is the first ordinance of its kind in the country, and sponsoring SF supervisor Ross Mirkarimi was on hand to help celebrate.  Haute Trash was honored to be part of this momentous event, and we put on a small "bag-themed" fashion show, emceed by the incredibly talented Olive Mitra. When our show was over, there followed a parade of over a dozen entries in a competition for the best trash fashion made from used bags. Some fantastic entries made it difficult to determine the audience's favorite! Winner of the $250 first prize was a sundress made from random bags and Clif Bar wrappers.

111 Minna Gallery graciously hosted complimentary beer, wine and hors d'ouvres during the first hour of the event, and happy hour went on till 9 pm, with live music by DJ Brent Northey. Haute Trash designers on hand were Prima and Redeema Debris, and Lotta Rubbish. Thanks to our models Nieves, RePsycho, Diva, Annie, Uma, Anna and Graham. TRASH BASH
Seattle Art Museum
Seattle, WA
Over 300 people packed the lobby of Seattle Art Museum with it's collection of Ford Taurus' flipping over head, their pulsing rope light strobes meant to look like fireworks exploding from within. Our models strutted themselves along a 24 foot runway beneath this colorful abstraction in everything from used gift wrap to Vietnamese pigfood bags, 45 designs in all.

Five California designers: Rayona, Prima, Redeema, Elvira (or was it Mental?) and Redusa took super model VeriUnique and flew off to Seattle where they joined Wayward Girls Productions, Chako San and 2 of our Seattle models gone designer: Elle Poubelle and Alotta DiTritus and proceeded to once again blow the collective Seattle mind.

The Trash Bash is an annual event sponsored by International Sustainable Institute (www.i-sustain.com), Seattle Art Museum and King County. Every year Haute Trash joins with a body of architects, urban planners and civic leaders ¡K some of whom actually build their own designs, while others model Haute Trash. King County Council woman Kathy Lambert wore Prima Debris' ¡§Made of Money¡¨ while in her day to day off stage she was ironically wrestling with the annual county budget! Green Building Consultant Yancey Wright built a fantastic ¡§Artful Dodger¡¨ costume as a reminder to take responsibility for your waste by not being someone who is good at avoiding responsibility or the consequences of his or her actions as an artful dodger! We had 2 lovely teens join us with pieces they called ¡§Andy Warhol's Love Child¡¨ (Allie Serousi) and ¡§Wrathe of the Holiday Aftermathe¡¨ (Olivia Tschider), and of course our favorite crazy architect Bill Gaylord with Jennifer Stormant created a LED lit, caped and crowned extravaganza they called the ¡§Ghost of Holidaze Past and Future¡¨¡K will your trash be back to haunt you this holiday season?

Every week, FIVE times a week, Seattle sends a mile long train of garbage to eastern Oregon to be buried. The real message behind this event: let's all see what we can do to curb our holiday waste¡K if each household in America were to reduce their holiday waste by only one pound, the total trash eliminated would be 250,000 TONS. Simple changes can make a big difference.

ECO KIDS!
The Imaginarium
Nevada City, CA
The Haute Trash kids presented a small fashion show for the annual "Eco Kids" event, hosted by the Sierra Nevada Deep Ecology Institute (www.sndei.org). What a fantastic event for children under five and their families and friends! There were booths, games, demonstrations, Smokey the Bear, Rock-n-Horse Ranch miniature horses, and much more. A great time was had by all! Big thanks to our young models: Quinn, Holly, Skyla (pictured here), Garbie, Litterbug, Baylee, Kaylan, Maddy, Nicki and Olivia.

October 26
HALLOWEEN HOLLOW
Downtown Reno, NV
This inaugural event in Reno's Riverwalk District proved to be tons of holiday fun. Typical of a first-time event, our audience grew substantially as our show progressed, and by the end, we had a packed crowd, hooting and hollering for our recycled fashions! Meredith Tanzer of the Riverwalk Merchant Association did a bang up job as our emcee, and about a dozen models paraded in nearly 30 outfits, running between the portable stage and the basement of a nearby restaurant to make costume changes!

October 26
"FREAKS OF FASHION"
The Siena Hotel and Casino
Reno NV
The Siena Hotel and Casino proved to be awesome hosts! AND...we got our name on a big Reno neon marquee! After our show at the street fair, we were shuttled back to the casino to prepare for our late night show in the downstairs lounge. Our models strutted their stuff down a runway through a fully packed house. Siena's Heidi Stroebe served as our Mistress of Ceremonies. Guest models who rocked the house were Nicole, Jenny, Molly, Brittney and Cassie. They were joined by regulars Loren, Griffin, Josh, Taylor, Aria, Redeema, Prima and Rayona.

October 14
BRIAR PATCH HARVEST FAIR
Grass Valley, CA
Rayona packed up a bunch of good trash and headed off to the Briar Patch Harvest Festival. She joined up with volunteers to take all that great trash, plus more recyclables saved by the staff, and helped the kids to make cool hats and costumes for halloween. Large 3-sided paper lantern crowns were quite popular with the younger kids, who would then paint them up with bright tempera colors. Some older kids got into the fun and made some trash fashion warrior costumes and quite glamorous net hats! All in a all, a great time was had, and the new Briar Patch Co-op proves again to be a hub of community activity.

October 10
22nd ANNUAL NAHMMA CONFERENCE
San Diego, CA

It was a whirlwind trip for designers Prima, Rayona, Redeema and Mental, who converged on the NAHMMA conference in San Diego. Dozens of attendees braved the runway to bring forth the fabulous fashions that are making Haute Trash a household name! Master of Ceremonies, Ray Carveth delivered the message while our models strutted in everything from elegant silver ball gowns and wedding dresses, to Neo-Traditional Nomadic Persian War Wear. A fantastic time was had by ALL of our participants, a huge thanks to everyone who helped make our show possible!

SYRCL'S GREAT YUBA RIVER CLEAN UP PARTY!
Memorial Park
Grass Valley, CA
Haute Trash paid a special tribute to the South Yuba River Citizens League at their annual "CleanUp" party. Each year, SYRCL hosts a huge clean up on the river, followed by a fabulous party at Memorial Park. Haute Trash presented a small show of river-related fashions. Folks got a peek at what incredible fashions can be made from useless popped river rafts and assorted air mattresses! Pictured here are Rhiannon in Mellow Yellow, Hannah in Beach Ball Babe, and Holly in Peacock.

September 13 & 14
GETTING BACK TO THE BIG IDEA
Miners Foundry
Nevada City, CA
This show turned out to be everything it promised! A fantastic reunion of designers, coming out of the woodwork and the landfills to explore some socially scientific fashion solutions to such neo-dilemmas as:   the monumental volume of our waste, global warming, the war for oil, planetary animal & forest destruction, AND: what happens when your make-over becomes a ¡§Man-Over¡¨?

Eighteen designers and an army of fantastic models presented our first show back in Nevada City in 17 years.   Our veteran designers teamed up with guest designers from all around the country. Emcees for the show were Kenny Miele, Serge Aronow, Joseph Meade, Mikail Graham, along with designer/emcees Rayona and Racey. Our show played to a standing-room-only crowd, who thrilled to such delights as our spoof TV show called "American Trash Doll", which had contestants vying for the most sustainable trash designer.

The lobby was decorated with trash art from Nevada City School of the Arts, and sales for our new postcards were brisk!

August 8 & 12
NEVADA COUNTY FAIR
Grass Valley, CA
This was our first year for doing two shows at our local county fair, thanks to our sponsor, Nevada County Recycles. Haute Trash worked hand in hand with NCR to produce an intelligent and witty show that left our audience a bit more enlightened about what they can do to help reduce the ridiculous amount of trash we humans create.

Menlo MacFarlane and Mikail Graham were our pirate emcees, as we presented a retrospective show that spanned two decades of trash fashion.

Pictured here is Teea, of Teea's Tampered Trash, wearing her own creation: Super Mom, made from the bags that once held disposable diapers, complete with pacifier necklace!

July 27
HAUTE TRASH MEETS TOUR de FAT!
Truckee, CA
Big thanks to New Belgium Brewing Company for inviting us to take part in this year's Tour de Fat. The Bar of America in downtown Truckee was packed as we took to the stage with our 15-piece show, designed to amaze and confuse our audience. New Belgium's rep, Kat Kellogg joined in the fun. She's seen here in Grape Lingerie, along with RePsycho, Redusa, Loren and Queena.

Saturday's events began with a renegade bike parade, and Rayona got the opportunity to ride her newly-won New Belgium Cruiser bike! She and Prima and RePsycho joined hundreds of other costumed riders, on all kinds of crazy bikes, and caused a little "critical mass" on the downtown streets! The Tour de Fat travels to major cities all over the west to promoting sustainability. Proceeds went to benefit the Truckee Trails Foundation and the Truckee River Watershed Council.

July 20, 2007

Association of Oregon Recyclers Conference
Redmond, OR
It was another road trip for Haute Trash designers Rayona, Redeeema and Prima. Along with our supermodel sidekick, Loren, we headed to central Oregon to bring our special brand of entertainment to the conventioneers at Eagle Crest Resort in Redmond. We kicked things off on Friday by helping out with a trash fashion workshop that invited attendees to try their hand at fashion design. We served on a panel of judges for the competition and ended up choosing three contestants, who each won a slot in our Saturday night fashion show.

The "James Bond" themed show was a huge success and it was fun to have a number of local recycling celebrities as models. Pictured here are three of our fabulous models from Bend: Whitney (in Grape Lingerie by Redusa D'Trash), Abby (in Moulin Rouge), and Xandy (in Walmart Goes Environmental, both by Elvira Mental Werks).

"All You Need is Love"
Nevada City, CA

KVMR DJ Jake Michael has been a KVMR broadcaster for more than 8 years. He created the ever popular "All Request Beatles Show". Jake is also a member of NU's award winning Chamber Choir which is pretty much what this all star benefit was all about, as everyone who performed donated their time to help raise $3500 to get Jake to Europe for the Choir's upcoming tour.

All of the performers did Beatles numbers, and Haute Trash performed a unique set to "Polythene Pam" and "She Came in Through the Bathroom Window", which had models making their way on stage, literally, through the bathroom window.

Junk to Funk

We’re here to tell you – Portland really knows how to put on a trash fashion competition! Haute Trash was represented by Rayona Visqueen, who modeled her “River Raft Rendezvous”, and Prima Debris who entered “Copper Coffee”, which was so graciously modeled by her daughter Redeema.

The show featured 26 outfits, mostly from Portland area artists, but there were several out-of-state entries, including Nancy Judd of Pulp Fashion, out of New Mexico, who took first prize with her fabulous “Faux Fur Coat” and “Teardrop Flapper Dress.” The Wonder Ballroom was packed, with the VIP seating filled to capacity and the floor packed with a standing-room-only crowd. Master of Ceremonies was Portland Commissioner Sam Adams, dressed in his suit made from bicycle inner tubes.

ReStore Shows
Seattle & Bellingham, WA

What a fantastic weekend in the great northwest for Haute Trash! Rayona played hostess to designers Prima, Redeema and Racey and their all-star models Plastica Wrap and VeriUnique. They brought along the works of Elvira Mental and Redusa to help put together a show of epic proportion, including several works by local designers and as always, some thought-provoking couture from Wayward Girls Productions. From the Trash Bash last February, we had the return of the immortal "Global Vices" by Bill Gaylord and Jennifer Stormant, and "Ode to the Egyptian Carpentress" by Hannah Brown. The ReStore attracted submissions from several great designers including a saucy duo of bicycle inner tube ensembles made by Aidana Baldasarre, (an east coast fashionista that we hope to see more of), a fancy frock of SAT words entitled “Literary License” by local designer Berkeley Parks, a flapper dress created from linoleum sample tiles by sister design team Desiree and Danielle, and an ultra sexy pair of metal-based fantasy designs by Bethany Moore. And we can't forget our top Trash-Model-turned-Designer, Chacko, wearing a lovely Kimono of beautiful Japanese packaging from her oh-so-yummy sushi restaurant, Miyabe, in South Center Seattle. Huge thanks to our Seattle photographer John Cornicello! An estimated 300 folks crammed into the ReStore warehouse, and spilled out onto the streets of Ballard to see almost 40 outfits strut up and down the 32 feet of recycled bowling alley lane runway. Rayona performed the emcee duties to rave reviews in her latest creation "River Raft Rendevous".

Then it was off to Bellingham to meet up with our bevy of gorgeous and willing super models there. We, the designers just lined 'em up and assigned them each an outfit (or two), and they assigned themselves all great trashy names! Emcees for this show were Resources for Sustainable Communities’ very own Dr. Dreggs Jettison and his lovely sidekick Robyn Dupree. Once again at the Wild Buffalo House of Music, we fearlessly trod the recycled red carpet runway perched miraculously upon a row of round bar tables. It was a packed house of adoring fans here as well. We want to give a huge THANK YOU to Marty Brennan and Jason Darling and their crews for making our experience so special and the shows so sweet! And another big THANKS to all the great local models who joined us, without you we are empty vessels! You Rock!! Haute Trash loves you, Seattle and Bellingham!! We'll be back.

Oakland, CA

The parking lot behind the ReStore and St. Vincent De Paul in Oakland was the scene for yet another fabulous runway show presented by Haute Trash. Designers Racey Garbaj, Redusa and Queena D'Trash, Prima and Redeema Debris and Miss Demeanor all made the trek to the east bay to put on a show that had the audience begging for more. Our master of ceremonies was the immensely talented Olive. Our "guerilla" dressing room, constructed by Redusa and Prima will surely go down in Haute Trash history! A big thanks goes out to our bay area models: Melanie, Laurette, Jade, Dimitrios, Sharon, Angel, Emily, and Desiree. And also to our models who traveled from as far as away as Reno and Bend, Oregon: Loren, Katie and Autumn. Oh, and we can't leave out Garbie and Litterbug, the kids make such a nice addition! The show was a huge success. Watch for more gigs in the San Francisco Bay Area in the near future.

"NON-FABRIC FASHION" WORKSHOP
Discovery World
Milwaukee, WI

Prima Debris traveled to Milwaukee to lead a young adults workshop at this fabulous new facility on the shores of Lake Michigan. The building was still under construction, which thrilled Prima because there was a huge array of great trash everywhere! Much of it was drug into the classroom and used as raw materials for the workshop. There was no shortage of inspiration as students spent the day constructing their trashy haute couture, which was modeled in a small afternoon fashion show in the brand new theatre. Watch for lots of great things to come from Discovery World!

Pictured here is a work in progress by student, Nikki.
